Seeing Art Through Fabric: Shape, Balance, and Stitch

mini quilt - no larger than 18" x 22" (A fat quarter).

In this workshop the aim is to look at a piece of art and consider how to create a quilt inspired by it. You are not aiming to replicate the piece, but rather to find a section of the piece that “speaks to you”.

For the workshop I have chosen a mixed media collage by Loló Soldevilla (1904–1971) who was a trailblazer of Cuban abstract art. Born in Havana, she began her career in music before finding her way to visual art. A move to Paris in the late 1940s changed everything — she studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière while working as a cultural attaché, soaking up new ideas around abstraction and movement. Her work, full of energy, colour, and structure, was shown internationally and continues to resonate today. You can view it here

Your task is to look and really think about what the image is saying to you. Consider sections of the image that interest you - use a viewfinder to isolate these.

How could you translate one of these ideas into a quilt design? You are not limited by technique. You can select any technique that interests you. You may wish to focus on just shapes or on colours. Your final design may be reminiscent of this piece, or it may not be apparent that there is a link! The aim is not to simply copy the original. Play, Improvise, Experiment, ask yourself some really important questions - “What if ……?”

Come to the session with some ideas and an open mind!

You can use solids, patterned fabrics or low-volume fabrics - your quilt, your choice!
