So, what do you need?

sewing machine in perfect working order. Don’t forget your power cable, foot control and instruction book,
cutting equipment (fabric and thread scissors, mat, rotary cutter, etc)
fabrics – choose according to your project below,
thread – always use good quality thread. You will need a shade to tone with your design for piecing (I tend to use different shades of grey according to the tone of my fabric).
Quilting thread – matching, toning, contrasting
Quarter inch foot
Walking foot for your machine and/or Open Toe Free Motion foot (needed for quilting)
Usual sewing kit – pins, hand stitch needles, safety pins, 505 spray etc …….
If you have a small iron and pressing mat, and water spray these could be useful!

Projects - Choose from

"Rail Fence Rhapsody" - create a quilt top using freehand curvaceous rail fence blocks. Depending on your experience and speed of working you may get as far as layering up your quilt and starting to quilt it.

Fabrics - Choose completely colour co-ordinated, or scrumptiously scrappy

Completely colour co-ordinated
- Light coloured fabrics in your colour scheme : 6 different pieces each ¼m
- Dark/medium coloured fabrics in your colour scheme : 6 different pieces each ¼m
Scrumptiously scrappy
- 12 light rectangles each 7” x 9” Choose a wide variety of colours and textures
- 12 dark/medium rectangles each 7” x 9”. Choose a wide variety of colours and textures
To make the quilt -
- Border – 1m
- Flange Binding – 0.3m binding plus 0.3m flange.
- Backing – 1½m plus some of your left overs to make a strip 4” x 60”
- Wadding 60” x 50”

"Melodious Arcs" - Mastering Quarter Circle Blocks and Curvilinear Shapes

After some skill-building exercises, start on your own compositions with confidence.

Fabrics - Choose fabrics that read as a single colour such as solids, hand-dyes, batiks, tone on tone prints and small scale prints.

Warm Up Exercise: Eight, 10x10in squares. 4 different dark colours and 4 different light colours.
Further play or create a quilt top :
1. Assorted fabrics or fabric scraps (at least 6x6in each) in both light and dark colours to be used for circles and insertions. You could also use fat quarters. Approx 2m in total
2. Approx1m background fabric that contrasts with the fabrics above.

To make the quilt -

Border – 1m
Flange Binding – 0.3m binding plus 0.3m flange.
Backing – 1½m plus some of your left overs to make a strip 4” x 60”
Wadding 60” x 50”
